Santi Flores conquers the center of Madrid: giant sculptures in the Barrio de las Letras

In February 2024, the streets of Madrid's iconic Barrio de las Letras were transformed into an extraordinary artistic stage thanks to the urban exhibition by Santi Flores, one of the most prominent contemporary creators in the field of public sculpture.

A sculptural intervention in urban space

From February 16 to April 16, thirteen monumental sculptures—each standing at an imposing 4.5 meters tall and made of stainless steel—were installed in iconic pedestrian areas in the Centro district. The works, displayed in iconic squares and corners such as Plaza de Santa Ana, Plaza de Platerías, Plaza de las Cortes, and the intersection of Sevilla and Alcalá, invited residents, visitors, and art lovers to rediscover the city through the presence of sculpture.

Each figure stands out for its unique gesture: a raised hand of disproportionate proportions, a symbol that Flores has developed throughout his career and that represents a positive message of individual affirmation and belonging to the collective. This gesture acts as an invitation to the viewer to stop, contemplate, and actively participate in the visual and emotional experience proposed by the work.

Colors, graphics, and uniqueness

Although they all share the same formal language, each sculpture is unique thanks to the application of the artist's characteristic colors and graphics. The different color combinations not only add dynamism to the whole, but also reinforce the idea that each individual, despite being part of a collective, maintains their visual and emotional uniqueness.

The result is an exhibition that interacts with the urban stroll: the sculptures can be viewed from multiple angles and perspectives, transforming everyday spaces into points of visual and sensory encounter.

An exhibition with international roots

The exhibition in Madrid did not emerge out of nowhere. After having been part of a public exhibition on Broadway, New York, where fourteen of his sculptures were exhibited for six months in 2022, Flores continues to establish his artistic proposal in urban spaces with high cultural and social impact.

Solitude at Galería Nueva

Alongside the exhibition in public spaces, the artist also presented an exhibition at Galería Nueva (14 San Agustín Street), where his Solitude series was exhibited. This smaller-scale proposal explored, through installations and more intimate pieces, the relationship between the individual and the crowd, a concept that finds an echo in the monumental presence of the street sculptures.

Art that transforms the city and perception

Santi Flores' exhibition in Madrid is a clear example of how art can redefine urban space, inviting reflection, encounter, and the viewer's direct participation. Beyond its scale, the work becomes an experience—a bridge between the city and the consciousness of the individual who walks through it.
